The Marriage of Mohammad and Khadija - NikahExplorer

The first wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H)

Hazrat Khadija (R.A) was the first wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) and the first woman who accepted Islam. The marriage of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) and Hazrat Khadija is considered as one of the most beautiful events in the history of Islam. The marriage between the messenger of Allah and the strong and most intelligent lady Hazrat Khadija happened in a very unique way which is still taken as the perfect example of marriage.

Hazrat Khadija has been married with Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) monogamously for 25 years

Hazrat Khadija married with Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) at her age of 40 years, whereas the Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) was 25 years old. She is the only wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) who had been married with Mohammad monogamously for 25 years and after her death Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) took other wives in his Nikah.

Once hazrat Aisa (R.A) asked Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) that if Hazrat Khadija (R.A) could be the only woman worthy of his love and on this he (P.B.U.H) replied:

“She believed in me when no one else did; she accepted Islam when people rejected me; and she helped and comforted me when there was no one else to lend me a helping hand.”

What Hazrat Aisha (R.A) says about Hazrat Khadija (R.A?)

Hazrat Aisha (R.A) is the wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) whose couple with prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) also considered as one of the beautiful couples in Islamic history. But in Hadith we find that even Hazrat Aisha (R.A) said about the kind of love Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) had for Hazrat Khadija. It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, narrated by Hazrat Aisha (R.A):

“I never felt as jealous of any wife of Allah's Apostle as I did of Khadija because Allah's Apostle used to remember and praise her too often and because it was revealed to Allah's Apostle that he should give her (Khadija) the glad tidings of her having a palace of Qasab in Paradise”. Children

There were four daughters and three sons of prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H). Out of which four daughters and two sons were of Hazrat Khadija (R.A), however one son was given birth by Maria al-Qibtiyya. The name of four daughters are, Zainab bint Mohammad, Ruqyya bint Mohammad, Umm-e-Kulsoom bint Mohammad, and Fatima bint Mohammad. The names of two sons who belonged to Hazrat Khadija (R.A) are Qasim ibn Mohammad and Abdullah ibn Mohammad. The only son who belonged to another wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) is Ibrahim ibn Mohammad and he was the son of Maria al-Qibtiyya. Other than these two wives there is no other wife of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) who gave birth to the Mohammad’s child. Hence, most of Prophet Mohammad’s children belong to Hazrat Khadija (R.A).

Proposals of Hazrat Khadija

After deaths of Hazrat Khadija’s husbands she did not want to marry. Many men of that time belonged to her tribe proposed her but she did not accept any proposal. It seemed as she did not want to marry or want to think about marriage.

Hazrat Khadija (R.A) who rejected many good proposals of men of Mecca and who was not interested in marriage had changed her mind when she saw the honesty of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H).

Hazrat Khadija has sent the proposal of marriage to Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H)

Hazrat Khadija (R.A) was the successful business woman and it is said that Hazrat Khadija’s caravan were equal to the Quraish’s trade caravan altogether. She used to employ others for the trade on her behalf and she did not travel herself for the trading purposes. One time she needed an honest co-worker for the transaction in Syria and that time she chose Mohammad (P.B.U.H). While sending Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) in Syria, Hazrat Khadija (R.A) also sent her one of servants Maysarah along with Mohammad (P.B.U.H) to assist him. After return Maysarah gave the details to hazrat Khadija (R.A) about honorable and honest ways through which Mohammad (P.B.U.H) conducted her business. And Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) came back with twice of profit than what Hazrat Khadija (R.A) has expected.

Hazrat Khadija (R.A) liked this honesty and intelligence of Prophet Mohmmad (P.B.U.H) and she fall for him. She decided to send the proposal of marriage to Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) and she asked one of friends named Nafisa to ask Mohammad if he would also like to marry. When Mohammad (P.B.U.H) got to know about this matter he hesitated to accept the marriage proposal because at that time he had no money to support or run a family then Nafisa asked that Khadija (R.A) would provide for her, and he (P.B.U.H) should not be worry about the responsibility of her which is stopping him to accept the proposal. Mohammad (P.B.U.H) agreed to meet Khadija (R.A), after meeting they preceded the matter to their uncles and this is how their marriage took place.
